How To Make A Crime Against You Tough To Commit
Ladies, it is not enough to just be aware of your surrounding to prevent a crime being committed against you. You have to be proactive in your approach to self defense. Remember, self defense is not just about defending your self physically in a face-to-face confrontation it is also about taking precautions to prevent a crime from even happening. Do you have any ideas on how to make yourself less of a target? You have to make it tough on criminals targeting you.
There area countless ideas that are bandied about in regards to protecting yourself from being a victim of crime. Some ideas are sound and some are not. Here are just a few of the many tips you should follow to prevent a crime from being committed against you:
1. Remain vigilant about your surroundings. Your head should be held high with your eyes always scanning the area for potential trouble like moving shadows or strangers hanging around in the parking lot. When you are familiar with an area, your quick scanning of the place would easily be able to pick out problems that you can avoid.
2. Do not be a creature of habit. Mix your routine up a bit. Instead of running the exact same 5 mile path, choose a different one. Take a different route home from work. Rearrange your errand schedule. Stalkers and other criminals who target you may study your habits first and if you are too predictable, you are basically setting yourself up for a potential attack.
3. Manufacturers put locks on doors and windows for a reason – use them! Criminals have it easy if you neglect to use the locks. You might as well put a sign around your neck for criminals saying, "Pick me! Pick me!" And if your lock looks rather easy to pick or open with a credit card, invest in some deadbolts and even security chains.
4. Join your neighborhood watch or join a community program dedicated to home and personal safety. Get to know the other people who live near you. You can be kept well informed when you become involved so invest that time in yourself.
5. Make it tough on criminals who pick you as a potential target. For the home, employ a security system as well as motion sensors which activate flood lights. The lights will quickly chase off an intruder. Reinforce the locks on the windows and doors. Close the pet door at night and when you are out of town as this is an easy entry for some criminals. Purchase a personal alarm that you can carry on your person which can be set off easily if you feel threatened.
6. To prevent being the victim of a carjacker, keep your windows rolled up and doors locked to prevent someone trying to break in and grab you or steal your car. When someone strange approaches your car and you feel threatened, honk your horn and flash your lights to scare them away. Always check the sights in your rearview and side mirrors to ensure that no one is trying to sneak up on you in your car.
The bottom line is you may not realize how easy you are making it for potential attackers to gain ready access to you. You forget to lock your car door when you are inside and drive off or you take the same exercise route each day. Perhaps you are multi-tasking while out and about (i.e. drinking a cup of coffee while walking and digging in your purse or talking on a cell phone) which can pull your attention away from identifying trouble. With a little effort, you can rework those ingrained habits and become quite unpredictable for the criminal element.
