Protect Your Home And Avoid Crime – The Ultimate In Self Defense

There is a very strong correlation between having a safe home and avoiding crime. If you make the effort to keep your home rid of crime and invasion, there is also a good chance that you will remain safe and secure. Here are some tips for ensuring that your home stays safe—and that you stay safe, too.

Make sure that your home looks "lived in"

No, this doesn't mean that your home has to look a mess. Rather, this has to do with the outer appearance of your home. Stand in front of your house and take a look at what you see. Does it look to be a house that someone cares for and lives in, or does it look like the family might have gone on permanent vacation? What exactly is the difference. Here are some questions to consider and check-off. First, what does the yard look like? Is the lawn well kept? Are the trees reasonably trimmed and pruned? Are the flowers blooming? Are the shrubs wild and busy, or do they appear to be taken care of? What about the house exterior itself? Is the roof in disrepair, the paint chipping? Is driveway full of old circulars or accumulated newspapers? Does it look like someone cares for this house? Then ask yourself one final question: if you were going to try to break into a house, would you choose house that looks abandoned, or one that looks well cared for? Most theft occurs in houses that appear to be abandoned or not well cared for.

Install a home security system—and learn how to use it

Many people pay top dollar for a state of the art home security system. While this is well and good on its own, it can only be truly helpful if you understand how your home security system works. Many people don't bother to learn how to use their home security system and all of its features. Take a guided tour of your system and learn to program it to your best advantage. You can change certain settings if you decide to go on vacation, and there are some home security systems that even allow you to "check in" on your house while you are out of town. Take advantage of the myriad security features that can help you stay in touch with your home sweet home.

Get to know your neighbors, and organize a neighborhood watch group

If your neighborhood has experienced a rash of robberies, it is important that you discuss this issue with neighbors. Get to know your neighbors. This small step can make a world of difference when it comes to getting to know the way your neighborhood works. Simply understanding your neighbor's schedules and activities can start to give you a sense of what is normal and what isn't. If you learn to take the pulse of your neighborhood, you will quickly find out what is normal and what is unusual in your neighborhood. Take an evening stroll with neighbors to get to know your neighbors and neighborhood better.

Take precautions when you go away on vacation

There are many important things you can do in order to ensure that your home remains safe while you are away on vacation. Make sure you can get someone to bring in your mail, your newspapers, water your plants, and get rid of all the other evidence that you are currently not in your home. Get a trusted neighbor to keep an eye out on your home, and of course, set your home security system settings adjusted for your vacation period.
